What we compare for credit-building products
True product type: credit-builder loan, rent reporting or another service; education loans serve a different need
All-in cost, fees and interest, total payments, and funds held or released
Named credit bureaus, reporting conditions and repayment or subscription commitment
How these picks work: A lower monthly payment is one payment criterion, not an all-in cost winner. Compare product types and the funds released alongside the term. Unknown facts are excluded from the criterion being compared.
Each pick needs a reviewed published version and a linked provider source. Picks name the need, evidence date and main drawback. Product-name order breaks equal-criterion ties. Compensation is not a selection input. Full methodology · Editorial policy · How we make money

Best for your situation
Up to three highlights for specific needs from reviewed published facts. Each shows a reason and trade-off. These are not personalized approval predictions; the finder checks your situation. How we choose these picks
Commercial payments do not determine these picks. Equal criteria use product name as a tie-breaker. The full list starts in alphabetical order; use the filters and sort to narrow it.
Why:Lowest confirmed monthly payment among 2 reviewed listed products: $25. This measures this cost only.
Trade-off:No cash upfront; loan funds are held in a bank CD until payoff or closure. Self platform terms updated November 19, 2025 require age 18+, capacity to contract and residence in the United States at the supplied address. Loan approval and identity verification apply; a separate issuing-bank loan agreement and promissory note govern the account. Older Self product disclosures require an SSN, valid bank account and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; another older Self article uses permanent resident or resident alien. Current product-specific temporary-visa and ITIN eligibility is unverified; general noncitizen identification language in platform terms does not establish loan eligibility. Older Self guidance describes a soft identity check and no hard inquiry; a newer marketing page says no credit check required. Current inquiry classification needs issuer confirmation. No existing credit score/history is advertised as necessary. Online/app application; supported payment methods include a personal debit card or checking account. U.S. residence in the state and at the address supplied is required by platform terms. A current product-specific state/territory availability list was not verified; do not infer unrestricted availability from the national marketing page.
Why:Reviewed facts list no credit check and reporting to credit bureaus.
Trade-off:$28/month for 48 months plus a $15 opening fee. Age 18+; physical U.S. address required. The product footer limits account holders to U.S. citizens or permanent residents; the FAQ describes permanent U.S. residence. A valid SSN or ITIN is accepted according to the eligibility FAQ and current support article, despite SSN-only wording in the footer. Identity verification, checking account or debit card, mobile phone and email are required. No minimum credit score or published income requirement. Approval remains subject to identity verification, successful opening-fee payment and underwriting; temporary visa eligibility is not established. Unavailable in Vermont (VT) and Wisconsin (WI), per the official FAQ and support center. Availability for a territory or other non-state address should be confirmed with CreditStrong.
Why:The published product type is rent reporting, with confirmed bureau reporting. Check participating landlords, named bureaus and fees.
Trade-off:Link and verify eligible rent payments; identity and rental details must be confirmed. Free rent reporting is available to Self users. A Self account and eligible residential rent payments are required; this service does not extend credit.
Published Rent+Bills enrollment requirements: age 18+, SSN and date of birth, a residential address in one of the 50 U.S. states, and a supported payment account that can be linked through Plaid. Identity, rental information and payments must be verified.
The rent-reporting enrollment help page specifically asks for an SSN. General Self terms allow policy-dependent alternative identity documents for non-U.S. citizens, but ITIN-only eligibility for this particular product is not confirmed. A pending SSN is not documented as sufficient. No immigration category is guaranteed eligibility.
The product advertises no credit check. Self terms nevertheless authorize access to consumer-report information for identity verification and service delivery; this is a reporting service, not a loan approval.
Free-product instructions require linking the account used for rent via Plaid and selecting the payment. Supported examples include property-manager bank transactions, bank-funded transfer-app payments with a matching landlord/payee, checks, and documented money orders or cashier’s checks. Cash, ATM withdrawals, cryptocurrency and untraceable payments are not accepted.
Reporting follows successful enrollment and verification. The current landing page says usually within 36 hours; bureau visibility can take two weeks or longer, and the terms allow up to two months. Manual verification may require lease or payment evidence.

All 50 states are covered by that stated requirement; District of Columbia and U.S. territory eligibility was not confirmed. Self terms require U.S. residence.
Build U.S. credit from scratch: compare the commitment
Compare credit-builder loans for immigrants and other credit-building options using the provider's published terms for your situation.
Credit-builder loan vs. secured card
With a credit-builder loan, funds are commonly held while you make scheduled payments. A secured card uses a cash deposit to support a credit line. Compare the payment commitment and fees of the specific products. CFPB: credit-building loans and cards. Compare secured credit cards →
Can you build credit with an ITIN?
Check whether the provider accepts an ITIN and which identity and address documents it requires. Confirm the credit check and reporting terms separately; one accepted tax ID does not establish every other eligibility condition.
Monthly cost, total payments and what you get back
Compare monthly payments, opening fees, interest or APR, repayment term and total payments. For a loan, check how much principal is released and when. A lower monthly payment does not establish a lower total cost or a refund of every fee.
Rent reporting and reporting to all three bureaus
For any product, verify the names of the bureaus that receive payment information. For rent reporting, ask whether your landlord or service participates and what it costs; positive rental payments can help build credit, but outcomes vary. CFPB: rent reporting.
Product-specific eligibility and features come from the provider's terms linked on each product detail page. “Not confirmed” means the published information we reviewed does not establish that claim.
