Build credit as a U.S. newcomer
Starting with no U.S. credit history? Explore a 6–12 month timeline for your first credit accounts, payment habits, and reporting milestones. This tool does not predict score points or a lender's decision.
What this means for your score
On-time payments and lower reported balances can support credit building. A secured card must report to a bureau to help establish a file. Paying interest is not necessary: paying the statement balance in full avoids interest.
A FICO score generally requires at least one account open for six months and at least one account reported in the past six months. Rent reporting and its effect vary by service, bureau, lender and scoring model. Rent alone does not guarantee a score. Existing credit-file information can change these outcomes.
Methodology: the timeline counts months of account age and assumed reported payments. It assumes a new card opens now and reports monthly, or that an existing account continues reporting monthly. It does not model proprietary scoring formulas. No credit report is accessed and inputs are not saved to your account.
