Methodology
How we compare
We turn published provider information into structured, side-by-side comparisons so you can see costs, eligibility and restrictions at a glance.
Product selection
We include products that are publicly available, open to newcomers, and relevant to one of our categories: U.S. checking accounts, secured credit cards, credit-building products and international money transfers. Products must have a published, current set of terms, fees and eligibility requirements.
Comparison criteria
Each category has its own comparison layout because the decision is different:
- Checking accounts: monthly fees and waivers, opening deposits, minimum balances, eligibility, access methods, service fees and restrictions.
- Secured cards: annual fee, refundable security deposit, purchase APR, eligibility, credit-building features, rewards and other charges.
- Credit-building products: product subtype, reported amount, cost, commitment length, access to funds, eligibility, reporting and exit conditions.
- Remittance: transfer fee, exchange-rate approach, additional charges, delivery speed, requirements, limits and practical details.
Official sources and review dates
We record the official source—typically a provider’s public fee schedule, terms page, or disclosure document—and the date it was retrieved or reviewed. Each product comparison shows a reviewed date and an expandable sources list. Older sources are flagged for re-review.
Sorting and ranking
Category lists start in alphabetical order. You can sort by the category’s published USD costs or review dates, and filter by recorded features and application requirements. A specific filter excludes unknown values; a dollar limit excludes costs without a confirmed USD currency. Finder results use your answers and the provider’s published eligibility rules, with match reasons and points to confirm. Commercial payments do not determine these lists or finder rankings.
How “Best for” picks work
These shortlists highlight specific needs using published product versions with a review date and a usable provider source. Unreviewed, unsourced, future-effective and expired versions cannot receive a pick. Attached evidence must be official, available by the review date and within any recorded effective and expiry dates; otherwise the product remains listed without a pick. When no source documents are attached, the reviewed version must link to its provider terms. Each pick displays its source, review date and main drawback.
Cost comparisons use confirmed amounts in U.S. dollars (a confirmed zero fee is currency-independent); unknown amounts are excluded. Checking picks compare monthly fees, opening deposits and explicit no-SSN requirements. Secured-card and credit-builder picks require confirmed bureau reporting. Loan payment and term comparisons use explicitly identified credit-builder loans; education loans and unknown types are excluded, and rent-reporting scenarios are labeled separately. Transfer picks use explicitly recorded funding and payout methods. Net-recipient-amount and speed winners require quotes for the same route, send amount, methods and time.
Each product appears at most once in a shortlist. When several products share a criterion, product name and version ID break ties and we show that equivalent options exist. A lower monthly payment is not a lower total cost. Each pick shows a published limitation or an important cost, commitment or requirement to confirm. Sponsorship and compensation are not inputs to this selection.
Finder results keep their existing personalized ranking. Their cards show satisfied published requirements, the main point to confirm, and an explanation of the ranking criteria and score. A top match label requires a specific satisfied reason. Sponsored cards are labeled separately and do not receive that label. These points describe the ranking, not an approval probability.
Unconfirmed information
When a detail is missing from official sources, we show “Not confirmed” instead of guessing. If a condition depends on unpublished discretion, we label it “Conditional” and explain the condition. We never present marketing language as verified fact.
Updates and corrections
Fees and eligibility rules change. If you spot outdated information, use our correction form. We route every report to editorial review and publish verified updates with a new review date.
