Starting your first credit file? Review the newcomer credit-building steps, then compare secured-card deposits and credit-builder total costs and requirements.

A suitable secured card can help you begin a U.S. credit record when it reports your account activity and you make payments as agreed. First check document eligibility and whether you can spare the deposit. Then compare fees, interest and reporting. No prior credit history does not mean no identity, income or other approval requirements.

Our research shortlist is Capital One Platinum Secured for a potentially lower initial deposit, Quicksilver Secured for simple cash back, Discover it Secured Cash Back for its current rewards structure, and OpenSky Plus for eligible applicants seeking a no-credit-check application. The last option has an important citizenship/permanent-residence limitation.

OpenSky Plus Secured Visa No application credit check for eligible applicants $300 minimum; no annual fee Published terms require U.S. citizenship or permanent residence and an SSN or ITIN

Capital One Platinum Secured: consider it when deposit size matters

The issuer can assign a lower deposit while providing an initial credit line of at least $200. Its page listed a 29.24% variable purchase APR when researched. Compare the actual offer rather than assuming you will receive the smallest deposit or an automatic upgrade.

Capital One's current ITIN guide specifically includes this card and Quicksilver Secured among possible ITIN options. Other application and verification requirements still apply.

Capital One Quicksilver Secured: consider it for simple cash back

The published offer earns 1.5% cash back on purchases and listed a 29.24% variable purchase APR. Evaluate that alongside the $200 minimum deposit. Rewards are a small benefit when you already planned to make the purchase and can pay the bill; they are not a reason to spend more.

Discover it Secured Cash Back: check the current offer

The current official page describes a deposit as low as $49 and 5% cash back in activated quarterly categories up to the applicable maximum, plus 1% otherwise. Those terms differ from historical descriptions of Discover's secured product. Read the current application disclosures, including purchase APR, rather than copying an older comparison.

Do not infer an ITIN route simply because another issuer or another Discover product permits one. Confirm the selected application accepts your documents.

OpenSky Plus: a conditional no-credit-check option

The product page advertises no credit check. The researched disclosures listed a 28.24% variable purchase APR and a 3% foreign transaction fee. Its residence restriction means an F-1 or H-1B visa alone does not satisfy the stated citizenship/permanent-residence requirement. Check all conditions before applying.

Understand what the deposit pays for

The deposit is collateral. It does not normally replace your monthly bill payment. If you deposit $200 and then make a $40 purchase, you still owe the purchase balance under the agreement. Keep enough separate money for rent, food and the card payment.

Refund and upgrade rules vary. A review for graduation is not a promise that your card will become unsecured after a specific number of months. Ask what happens when you close the account with a remaining balance.

Use the first account deliberately

Start with manageable planned spending, monitor statements and arrange payment reminders or affordable autopay. Paying the full statement balance by the due date can avoid purchase interest when the card's grace-period conditions apply. You do not need to carry interest-bearing debt merely to build credit.

Frequently asked questions

Can an immigrant get a secured card without an SSN?

Some cards have documented ITIN routes. That does not mean every card accepts an ITIN or that a passport-only application is available.

Is a secured card guaranteed approval?

No. Deposit funding, identity checks, income and other criteria may still apply, even when there is no credit check.

Which card builds credit fastest?

There is no established universal winner. Reporting, your complete credit file and account management matter; no specific score increase is promised here.
